About Us
The project was initiated in February 2008 when a former member of the Young People’s Paliament (over Facebook, as all great things are) agreed with a colleague they felt it would be valuable to arrange an event that would allow young people either living, working or being educated in Birmingham to consult with decision-makers on Transport issues surrounding the city. Shortly after, the Birmingham Young People’’s Transport Steering Group was formed of six, independent young people who were already active in giving young people a voice. The group made contact with Birmingham City Council to see how such ideas could be put into action.
Since then they’ve been working with the Transportation Department in furthering the project; a large part of this will be the event and competition, but both Birmingham City Council and the Steering Group are keen on ensuring the dialogue continues after the project. The event itself will take place on Thursday 2nd April, and will take place in the Banqueting Suite at the Council House - details on how to register can be found elsewhere on the blog.
The Steering Group don’t just want to explore the transportation situation in Birmingham at the moment, important as it is, but also encourage young people to construct sustainable, alternative plans stemming as far into the future as the next 20 years. Young people will get to discuss ideas with delegates from the organisations that maintain Birmingham’s Transport network, such as from Operation Safer Travel, CENTRO and the School Travel Plan Team.
